Not poetry...yet simply poetic
If there is one thing I know I definitely inherited from my dad was his love of a good bargain or discount. Some would say its being frugal, but for me I call it just smart shopping. Personally I do not stray too far from my favorite shops and so I tend to look for ways to save even more at them. Here is where my “IT Factor” comes into play …
What the “IT” is I...

Not Mama
Her hips sway …like Mama’s
Her smile shines bright,
There is even a twinkle in her eye… like Mama’s
You take a look longer than a glance
Just like you do with Mama
Did I just hear a word you told me was not ok to say…?
Starts with D…and ends with anyway…
I try with my innocent mind to figure out why
Your head twists each time a grown lady
Not Mama walks by
Did the hinge that holds your...

The Illusion of My Crown
The illusion of my crown draws attention from those that would normally not speak.
As their minds are confused by what their eyes see
I openly let them know that my crown is an added extension of me
Freely I change its look to suit my needs
The illusion of my crown draws attention from those that would normally not speak.
My honesty brings clarity to confused minds that eyes stare in...

American Woman, She Needs No Ride
“Taxi? You need a taxi Miss a ride?” Asks Mr. African Yellow cab driver
“No thank you” She hurries away looking towards her destination, the terminal entrance.
“These American Women! ” Mr. African Yellow cab driver murmurs in disgust to his friend
“What about us?” She wants to yell back, but she gives him a reprieve.
She has no time to show her American Woman sass.

Pink Bedroom Slippers
In the wee hours of the morning traveling
Looking for sanctuary a place to refresh
In a terminal haunted with spirits and souls
Trapped in limbo between life and death
Her name is unknown
No face
All that shows are her pink bedroom slippers
Her body hidden
Encased in silver of her throne
This place she calls home

Mama is already on the bus
Young man, prepares to take a journey
To points unknown
Bags packed, with all he owns
Mama and Papa old like Abraham and Sarah
Wait to get on the bus
Child they did not birth,
But still of their blood
Bus operator checks Papa and Young man’s tickets
“Where is Mama?” says Papa to his son
Young man says to Papa “Mama is already on the bus”
At the first stop they get off
Young man lays...

Late Harvest Wine
Sweet nectar
Touches my lips
My tongue dances with joy
Its value increases as it ages
Its process involves special care
Late harvest wine
Is like this love we share

The Mist
The breeze is cool on my neck
The water is clear as it falls
In a pool below my feet
Like a knight with broad shoulders
Dark skinned eyes that gleam
Through the mist he appears
To take my hand and guide me
The warmth from his hand
Hits me like waves that cause me to shiver
I take a moment to quiet my thoughts
Keeping them holy
My heart always misses a beat when he is near
Through the...

He Gives Me Reason to Want to Exhale
He gives me reason to want to exhale
My heart goes a flutter when he is near
Just at the sound of his voice…
Mere words cannot describe how he makes me feel
No touch is necessary when it’s real

Not Common yet Strange Fruit
Young lady where have you left your honor
Your respect, your dignity?
Do you realize that you are descended from Kings and Queens?
Not common yet strange is the fruit you produce
Your sons dress as you and your daughters like dudes
Angry words you fed into their souls
Wounds left open from daddies that only planted their seeds like weeds into your fertile bitter soil
Mothers don’t look...

Check the fruit
If you are not sure of my fruit… this tree just like the one in the Bible speaks. I am NOT the same person I was a year ago. If you can’t see it by my fruit… don’t ask the sucker branches by my feet…

Back to the Basics
During the last few weeks or so I have been writing more especially poetry. I have gone back to the basics… pen to paper and stopping to really observe my surroundings, feelings, attitude and atmosphere.
On the writing front… A few weeks ago I began the outline of my mother’s story. Her story alone is one that I believe would be a bestseller. My dad’s is another one....

Preparing for Boaz
This poem is for my sisters
However, I hope I get some nods from the fellas…
So you say you are preparing for your Boaz.
The man, you want to share the rest of your life with
Have him call you his wife, share his name…
Maybe raise a kid or two with,
hoping even through the weight gain and stretch marks
he will love you just the same.
However…Ladies…my sister girl friends…
We think at...

A Poem for my Mother
I wish… I hadn’t known
It was time to say goodbye
I wish… I hadn’t known
It was time to say goodbye
You let me know, she let me know
Through the sadness in her eyes…
Oh mother dear, you were my friend
And wish I could not cry
But it was sad, it was sad
to say goodbye
My mother was my friend
My shoulder when it was my father’s time to rest
My rock when I couldn’t stand alone
But now I...

Barefooted
I dare to walk alone
Yet you are always present
Your voice is so clear in my ear.
Guiding me down roads without fear
Barefooted…
Stones and pebbles lay underfoot.
Blood drawn I fall and scrap a knee
Get up… I hear… Get up…I hear so audibly.
Get UP! For righteousness sake
Arise…repent.
Barefooted
Dreams deferred
And given back renewed
Cause their source
Had to be known
My feet are...

I am tired of trying...
I am tired of trying (severely straining the powers of endurance.) Using others hesitation as an excuse (justify) for my slow feet. My dreams are mine and my diligence and faith are the keys to their fulfillment. I identify, eliminate and conquer. My enemies quake at my feet.

This morning...
This morning I woke up.
Stumbling grasping for answers.
Lost in a fog.
Not sure of whether I was up or down.
Yet smart enough to reach out
and call HIS name…
Jesus!

When Home No Longer Feels Like Home
We all at times must learn how to detach
from the cord and go and explore on our own.
We must leave so that we may become who we are
supposed to be and more.
However, we all should realize,
before we soar we must crawl
and sometimes fall.
Picking yourself up from the ashes and beginning
all over again shows true strength.
Learning to be happy with one’s self
before finding a...
